Farmers, cattle to benefit from new trade agreement with Japan

RSPCA Australia has welcomed the new trade agreement with Japan which will see tariffs on frozen beef halved to 19.5 percent over the next 18 years.

This trade agreement will deliver stable and consistent long-term markets for Australian cattle producers, a sharp contrast to the risky and unstable markets offered by the live export trade.

The agreement will deliver real financial benefits at the farm gate and support on-going growth.

Most of all it will enable more Australian cattle producers to access Australia’s most significant overseas market whilst being assured that the welfare of their animals is upheld.

Expanding beef exports is good for producers, good for the domestic meat processing industry, and good for animal welfare as it ensures a higher proportion of cattle are slaughtered in Australia in accordance with first-rate Australian standards.
